Even the most unassuming parts of Edinburgh harbour links to notable history. These buildings from the late-Victorian period stand on the grounds of a former mansion house and the street on the left is named after James Tytler who, in 1784, became the first person in Britain to steer a hot air balloon. He soared 350 feet into the air in his 'Grand Edinburgh Fire Balloon' from somewhere near this spot, only to land half a mile away in the village of Restalrig. After editing all ten volumes of the second edition of the Encyclopaedia Britannica single-handed and joining the reformist 'Society of the Friends of the People', he emigrated to the United States in 1795 to escape a charge of seditious libel. http://www.stamp-shop.com/tytler/
