Martyr's Memorial

Erected in 1901 to commemorate the 17 protestant martyrs who were burnt at the stake in Lewes during the reign of Mary. The event is remembered each year by the town's bonfire celebrations. The town's staunch protestantism is believed to have been caused by the massive unpopularity of the Priory of St Pancras. The memorial is behind the Cuilfail estate and is designed to be seen from the spot in the centre of Lewes where the 17 were burnt at the stake.
