A view of the war memorial and the central block of Nottingham High School taken from Arboretum Street. This is an independent, fee-paying school for boys of between 11-18 yrs. Overall the school has a roll of approximately 900 pupils including the adjoining Nottingham High (Junior) School and the Lovell Infant House for pupils aged between 4-7yrs. The school was founded in 1513 but since 1868 it has been located here on “Waverley Mount”. Dame Agnes Mellers founded this "Free School" in 1513 after the death of her husband, partly in his memory but also as an act of atonement for his wrongdoings against the people of Nottingham. Its Old Boys include D. H. Lawrence - the writer and publisher, Rt Hon. Ed Balls - M.P., Rt Hon Kenneth Clarke - Q.C, M.P., Jesse Boot - the founder of Boots, the Chemist, John Player - the tobacco industrialist and J. P. Knight - the inventor of the traffic light.
