SE side of Grade II listed former Plaza Cinema, Port Talbot

The Plaza Cinema, Grade II listed in April 1999, is on the corner of Talbot Road and Eagle Street. It opened at Easter 1940. Seating up to 1450 people, the cinema was for a time the main local entertainment venue, though it later suffered from the competition from larger cinemas in Neath and Swansea. The cinema was converted to a bingo hall in 1983. It reopened as a cinema in October 1985, finally closing in 1999, since when the building has been derelict. In January 2011, the building was bought by Neath Port Talbot Council. The council's head of regeneration said: "The council purchased the Plaza Cinema for the very reason that it recognises both the regard with which it is held within the town, and also its strategic significance as part of the council's aspirations for the regeneration of Port Talbot town centre, in particular the lower end of Station Road and Harbourside.
