The plaque on the wall reads "Balhaldie House dates from 1695 and was the town house of the Drummonds of Balhaldie, whose estate was two miles north of the town. William Drummond was a Jacobite spy who encouraged the rebellion of 1745. Prince Charles Edward Stuart slept in the house on the night of 11th September 1745 on his way to the battle of Prestonpans.
