An old legend states that St Patrick himself picked the site of this monastery by throwing a spear from the summit of Tamary Hill. Where the spear landed would become the site of a new monastery. The graveyard is bounded by a circular earthen bank which was typical of the monastic settlements of the Celtic Church not only in Ireland but also in the western parts of the British mainland.
