The grid of straight roads with evenly-spaced buildings south of the Abingtons looks odd on the map. It originated as an estate of five-acre smallholdings providing opportunities for the unemployed, established in the 1930s by the Land Settlement Association - see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Land_Settlement_Association .
