One of the earliest UK motorways, the M45 is arguably the least affected by progress since its opening in November 1959. Bridge designs, 2 lanes per carriageway and its general straightness give a flavour of what several early motorways looked like, most notably the M5 and M50 in England and the M8 in Scotland.
