Reentrant in the rising Midlothian plateau. Some of the steeper ground is uncultivated, providing a wildlife and flower habitat. There is a belt of exposed limestone here, providing a fertile area for some species. The woodland is a shelterbelt, its getting high and exposed in this square, and snow can be a problem, especially with high moorland to the south.
