Gawthorpe Hall is an Elizabethan house at the side of the River Calder, in grounds to the north east of the town of Padiham. The house was built in 1600 around an earlier pele (peel) tower (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pele_tower ). It was the family home of the Shuttleworth family until 1970 and is now managed by Lancashire County Council and The National Trust. It is a Grade I listed building. more information: http://www.lancashire.gov.uk/acs/sites/museums/venues/gawthorpe/?siteid=3773&pageid=12946&e=e Lancashire County Council http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/gawthorpe-hall/ The National trust http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gawthorpe_Hall Wikipedia
