Craighall limekiln

A massive relic of nineteenth century industry, this limekiln was built (mainly from stones taken from the nearby and then derelict 17th century Craighall Castle) in 1814. Limestone quarried in Craighall Den was burned in the kiln along with locally mined coal to produce lime for agriculture and building purposes. The kiln had but a short life, closing for ever in 1837.
