The original Exchange Brewery was established in 1820 and moved to its present site in 1852, covering the area that had formerly been known as “The Isle” and, by the end of the nineteenth century, had become Sheffield’s largest brewery. The business was taken over by Whitbread’s in 1962, and closed in 1990. Much of the plant has been demolished but a part of the 1852 brewery near Lady’s Bridge has been refurbished as office space.
