Viewed here from the side of the tramway, the high-rise council housing estate, Park Hill, was built between 1957 and 1961. In 1998, it was given Grade II* listed building status, the largest listed building in Europe. The estate is currently being renovated by developers Urban Splash, following a long period of decline. For more details (and the story behind the “Will U Marry Me?” slogan) see http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Park_Hill,_Sheffield (Wikipedia).
