The pub has held this name since the middle of the 18th C. Previously named establishments have occupied the site for two centuries prior to that. It is after all a prime position, at the point where the main roads from Salisbury and Stockbridge meet to cross the River Test. It's thought that an earlier bridge crossed the river just behind the pub.
