Victorian tenements built on the ascent to the former Bishop's Castle and Cathedral, known as 'the Bell o' the Brae'. According to 'Blind Harry', the Minstrel, it was the scene of a clash in 1297 when a William Wallace and his men scattered an occupying force of Southrons. http://www.thesocietyofwilliamwallace.com/battleothebellothebrae.htm
