As an Edinburgh man I'm constantly baffled by Glasgow's long-standing capacity for self-harm. Given that the city was once reputed to have the worst slums in Europe after Naples, I can understand that a pent-up hunger for modernisation drove developments in the 1960s and 70s; but I'm less certain as to why the mutilation continues in an age when it has become desirable to pursue policies of conservation and restoration whenever possible. Market forces clearly predominate here. "If one wanted a rough-and-ready generalisation to express the difference between a Glasgow man and an Edinburgh man, one might say that every Edinburgh man considers himself a little better than his neighbour, and every Glasgow man just as good as his neighbour." -- Edwin Muir, Scottish Journey, 1935
