Ormeau Avenue does not appear in the 1880 street directory but is shown on a map of 1897. Its buildings tended to reflect the architectural style of the late 19th century. Many were connected with the linen and clothing trades. This one (now Government offices), at the corner of Maryville Street, was once H Berrington & Co Ltd, manufacturers of Holland aprons and overalls. In later years it housed the office of the Registrar General. After a long period lying vacant and semi-derelict it was the subject of a major renovation in the 1990’s. My understanding is that, internally, only the stairwell and banisters remained untouched.
