Lawton Treble Locks near Lawton-gate, Cheshire

This is the northern and later chamber (circa 1830) of the pair No 52 at the bottom of the Lawton Treble set. Originally James Brindley built single locks (circa 1776) all the way on the Trent and Mersey Canal. Later, Thomas Telford supervised pairing of most of the Cheshire Locks from Kidsgrove to Wheelock in order to speed up traffic. Strange that the Pierpoint Locks were missed out of this development. Here, both are still in use. In other venues, some locks are inoperative (awaiting restoration) or filled in.
