Trent and Mersey Canal at Lawton Bottom Locks, Cheshire

This is Lock No 52, the bottom of the three paired locks near Lawton-gate, Cheshire. The locks were originally single, built by James Brindley in the mid 1770s (the left one, about to be used by the narrowboat). In order to speed traffic along in the 1830s Thomas Telford supervised pairing of most of the locks between Hardings Wood and Wheelock. Today, some are in need of repair, and some have been filled in. Here they are both in use.
