The plaque on the front wall of the central building says "Erected 1866. In Memory of Edward John, First Lord Hatherton" Edward John Littleton, the 1st Baron Hatherton, was a wealthy landowner who lived at Teddesley Estate just east of Penkridge, and owned large areas of land locally. He served in both Houses of Parliament over a period of 40-odd years from 1812, and took a particularly close interest in Employment laws, and in matters pertaining to Ireland.
