This roadside statue is to David Davies (1818-1890) a local man of ordinary birth who advanced himself very far in industry, commerce and politics. A very rare feat in his day. He became a coal magnate, opening two important mines in the Rhondda Valley of South Wales, ran railways across his native Mid Wales, was elected a Liberal MP in the 1870's and also acted very philanthropically throughout his life. Where is his ilk today?
