Despite the somewhat naff name of 'Ye Olde Cross Gates Inn' this large pub is a good one, with a simple, honest and unpretentious approach to its stock in trade that many pubs could easily follow. It serves food and drink reasonably fast, at reasonably reasonable prices and in a reasonably cheery manner. Its decor is modern and sound, the staff good and it both serves the village and surrounding residents, managing to combine that with attracting passing traffic on the routes to and from Wales (Vyrnwy, Welshpool etc). It claims to date from 1643 but the building we see here is evolved from its first incarnation. Its name possibly derives from some form of barrier in this key road in from Wales towards Shrewsbury.
