It seems that nobody knows the meaning of this carving above a blocked-in window next to the Pennine Way path. The script is also unknown. English Heritage have made a guess at 'possibly a vernacular version of the Greek for "Jesus Christ"': http://list.english-heritage.org.uk/resultsingle.aspx?uid=1126551 A local history group guesses 'it has been said that it is a vernacular interpretation of the Greek words for Jesus Christ or that it stands for John Horsfall who had Higher Underbank built': http://www.hebdenbridgehistory.org.uk/charlestown/underbank.html#higher
