Altered 18th century Grade II Listed building. Also known as The Bay Horse until the mid 1860s. (Bay Horse 1861 Post Office directory and Volunteer by 1868) The name is possibly after the 320 strong force raised in the town during the Nepoleonic War of 1803 to 1814 but it is most likely that the pub was re-named after the mid-19th century volunteer forces formed in 1859-60. Notice the dentil cornice under the eaves which is made of bricks set on edge that, with other details, could suggest an earlier date for the building. Sutton, Bean & Co Ltd owned the pub possibly from around 1900 (the business not having been formed until after 1893) until Hull Brewery Co. Ltd. bought the bulk of the licensed houses and the brewery in 1925 and certainly owned the Volunteer Arms in the early 1930s. Refurbishment was carried out in 1983 and again more recently. Directory entries include; 1828-1835 Robert Jennings; 1841-1861 Ann Jennings; Name change here; 1868-1872 James Philipson; 1885 George Green Thompson; 1889 William Nundy; 1896 Robert Burgess; 1901 no name given; 1905 William Topps; 1909-1919 Mrs Mary Ann Tops.
