The old Roman Road goes very gently downhill. If you looked in the other direction it would (after a short level bit) do the same. I was standing almost exactly on the main watershed of England. Rain falling on the ground in the photo would drain to the Thames, whereas rain falling behind me would drain to the River Avon (the one that flows through Bath) and so into the Bristol Channel. I wonder whether the Romans realised the significance of this spot.
