The fact that people own cars and need to park them somewhere seems to come as a surprise to designers of new housing estates (the BMW is parked, not waiting at the junction). In fact short term profits always win over providing a little extra space to make the place somewhere pleasant to live. With house building rates well below requirements (and council targets) and a general feeling against building on greenfield sites such as this one, developers have considerable leverage over council planning officials when they try to squeeze in extra houses into their small plots.
