The plaque on the cairn indicates that the officers from both sides killed in the battle of Killiecrankie on 27th July 1689 were buried in this location. An archaeological survey undertaken in 2003 revealed no evidence of burials, though given the high number of casualties in this battle (upwards of 2500 dead), it is likely that burials survive somewhere in this area.
