Brass to Sir Edward de Cerne and wife Ellen - church of St James, Draycot Cerne

The second ancient memorial of importance in the chancel is the monumental brass to Sir Edward de Cerne in the centre of the chancel floor. Sir Edward died in 1393, and Ellen his wife in 1419, and is a fine example of the period despite the loss of the crest and shields. The Norman French inscription roughly translates as 'Edward Cerne, knight, and Ellen his wife lie here, on whose souls may God have mercy. Amen'. Traces of another four brasses can be seen on the chancel floor, all are now gone.
