As far as I know these defences were never tested. The 'steps' in the window openings were designed to stop bullets etc, and the windows on all sides gave a clear view, and line of fire, along the river in both directions. The bollard in the foreground may well have been part of the original quay, which was in existence by 1882 (O.S. map)
