One of the 'inventions' of engineer Barnes Wallis. As the inventor of the first such bomb this was used in the RAF's Operation Chastise of May 1943 to bounce into German dams and explode underwater, with similar effect to the underground detonation of the earthquake bombs Grand Slam and Tallboy, both of which he also invented. Hence the 'Dam busters' and 617 squadron which flew from Lincolnshire.
