The old Almshouse can trace its roots here back to 16th July, 1575, when the Guild of Merchant Tailors bought the tenements for the princely sum of £16 16s 10.25d. Having stayed at this address for several years the last member finally passed away in 1824. After being used by the local council and financial institutions it was incorporated into the new Galleries shopping centre in 1990. However, the exterior and some internal fittings were retained only to be overshadowed by the mall architecture. See Image] for a wider view.
