George Hawks (1801-1863) http://isee.gateshead.gov.uk/detail.php?type=related&kv=2864&t=objects was the first Mayor of Gateshead in 1836 and a leading partner in the Gateshead Iron Works, Hawks, Crawshay and Sons, a long-standing local firm notable for casting the iron work for the building of the High Level Bridge. He was a popular industrialist and adopted a paternalistic and caring attitude to his employees. The memorial was unveiled in 1865. http://pmsa.cch.kcl.ac.uk/pmsa-database/9633/
