Road to Bettisfield Colliery

The building ahead is the old engine house for Bettisfield Colliery, the sole building remaining from the Colliery. Bettisfield mine was sunk in 1872, there were two shafts 290 yds deep. Despite working out under the River Dee estuary water was never reported as a problem and only two small pumps where used, 15inch cylinders with a 10 inch stroke. The colliery did not survive the depression and strikes of the 20s & 30s and closed in December 1933 with a loss of 415 jobs.
