On the right is the gable end of Matfen Village Store (a shop and cafe). Just beyond the footbridge over the Whittle Dene Watercourse, that runs through the village, is the drinking fountain Image The fountain was erected in 1886 and is Grade II Listed. The inscription is now hard to read: "Erected by the Tenants, Employees and Tradesmen in the Matfen and West Water Estates as a mark of their sincere respect and esteem for Sir Edward Blackett" https://historicengland.org.uk/listing/the-list/list-entry/1042784
