No. 43885 is a typical example of the 192 4Fs built before Grouping of a class that eventually totalled 580 and were to be seen all over the LMS/BR (LMR & ScR) systems on almost every conceivable duty, although primarily general freight and mineral traffic. Kirkby Depot mainly served the various coal mines along the ex-Midland Nottingham - Mansfield - Worksop line. This line is now the 'Robin Hood' Line, but through Kirkby-in-Ashfield it deviates to the west, away from the ex-Midland route through the former Kirkby East station and Sidings, which over some 50 years have been obliterated by other industrial and residential development: hence the rather strange present-day location on the map.
