The River Allen flows over chalk for almost all of its length until it joins the River Stour at Wimborne Minster. The uppermost parts of the river's thirteen mile length is as a winterbourne, meaning that in summer it can disappear in dry weather. But downstream from Wimborne St Giles it flows all year round.
