It's 40 years since the last TPO mail exchanges for real but the Great Central Railway is keeping the art alive. The set is on the line to Loughborough but is to return shortly on the line south and will perform a mail exchange from and to the apparatus in the foreground. The exchange is performed at 35 mph and is so quick that it's almost imperceptible. One moment there are two pouches hanging and an empty net and in less than a heartbeat there are four pouches in the net and the two dangling are being whisked into the distance on the TPO set. It's certainly a spectacle and I decided to watch rather than to attempt a shot requiring huge amounts of serendipity.
