The line of the Mains Burn prior to flood defence works was more or less along the boundary between the cut grass to the left of the path and the rougher grass nearer the hedge line. The hedge formed the edge of one of the fields of Kettlestoun Mains farm. In winter it was a favourite sledging venue. In summer, the burn provided countless ways of getting wet feet. The burn was sacrificed to protect the new housing which was built on its flood plain (!) and is now impassible to migrating fish, flowing as it does, through several hundred metres of piping. The garages are not shown on the OS map although they have been here since at least the 1950s.
