The pub name comes from Beckley's link with the Earls of Abingdon. Beckley was inherited in 1657 by James Bertie who was made 1st Earl of Abingdon by King Charles 2 in 1682. The estate remained with the Earls of Abingdon until 1919. Apparently the author Evelyn Waugh was fond of this pub.
