The station was built as long ago as 1889, before the area took on its present suburban character. The initials of the railway - the London & South Western - and the date, 1889, are commemorated in fancy brickwork in the middle of the gable (below the triangular pediment). Once the railway had arrived, suburban streets soon followed. I knew this station in my childhood, when it was managed by British Railways, Southern Region. In those days, signs, doors, seats, and the ticket collector's cap badge were green. Nonetheless, the train service was provided by London Transport, and the trains were painted red.
