Gulls clustered on the playing field area of Hearsall Common, with the rear of houses in Coniston Road beyond. Coniston Road was constructed between 1910 and 1915 and the houses on the north side, backing onto the common, were required to have rear elevations with decoration more usual for the front of houses to give a more pleasing aspect when viewed from the common.
