47 489 hauling a Liverpool - Glasgow train. The train is just breasting the summit of Boar's Head bank which is a gradient of approximately 1 in 104 for 2 miles north bound out of Wigan. At the time these trains were diesel hauled between Liverpool and Preston where an electric loco would take over.
