A Beech tree toppled in the storm of Tuesday 3 January 2012, near Elwartlaw, south of Greenlaw. This is one of numerous trees damaged or uprooted in the violent gales on this day. Wind speeds reached 75 mph in Greenlaw, whilst I personally recorded 45 mph at my garden weather station. A power outage at my nearby home and surrounding area lasted from 0915 hrs until 1030 hrs the next day. Extensive damage was caused elsewhere in Scotland. At the peak of the storm, gusts of 102 mph were recorded at Blackford Hill in Edinburgh, with winds reaching 97 mph in Bishopton, Renfrewshire and 91 mph on Islay. A prior storm, on Thursday 8 December 2011 also caused damage and disruption.
