The pines make a welcome sight at this time of year when all other trees are bare. Beyond the trees is the site of the former manor and settlement known as Heighton St Clere which disappeared when the Gage family inherited both that and the one at Firle and decided to consolidate their gains into one building, Firle Place. The surrounding park necessitated the removal of the rest of the settlement along the lane that is now known as Heighton Street.
