Originally the lane from Firle to Selmeston, it was turnpiked in 1819 as part of the new route from Lewes to Eastbourne and was the main A27 until the section between Middle Farm and the lane to the village was straightened in the 1960s. The current lane runs from Crossways north of the village to the A27 north of Decoy Pond.
