The track opposite the signpost leads to Ashburnham Place, a former stately home which is now used as a Christian conference and prayer centre. This is Ashburnham Pound, the site of the former parish 'pound', which was an open enclosure where stray animals were impounded until their owner claimed them (and paid a small fine).
