The Church of St Michael is built from the local Hornton Stone - a ferruginous limestone or ironstone. The stone is prized by architects, builders and sculptors as it is easy to work yet durable. Easy to see why it is also known as Gingerbread Stone. The church was originally built in the 12th century. The south aisle on this side was added in the late 13th century. The north aisle, chancel, vestry, priest's room and tower are 14th century. The top part of the tower was added in the 15th century.
