Early twentieth century houses of considerable size were built in Sutton Road opposite Queen Mary's Grammar and Mayfield Preparatory Schools. Even by the mid 1960s, some of these had been converted into flats which were rented out. These have now been sold as separate dwellings. I recall the amusement experienced (c1974) when I spotted some young lads one Saturday scrumping apples (I think) in the grounds of the Mayfield Preparatory School on the opposite side of the road. I hung out of the top window and did a passable crescendo mimicking an approaching police car, "dah-dah-dah-dah-dah-dah" in minor thirds on my battered old trombone. Did they run?!!! They almost fell off the wall in their haste to disappear :-)
