Built between 1844 and 1847 - see: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Morpeth_Dock - the 3 miles of docks at Birkenhead were an amazing engineering feat as the marshy land was not suitable for this purpose. Furthermore, the building of them was undermined by political pressure from the Mersey Docks and Harbour Board, who later became their owner. On the left-hand side of the photo (not shown) is a sewage treatment plant and on the right is the Twelve Quays development. On the top left, you can just about see Egerton bridge.
