John Cowane was a wealthy Stirling wine merchant and Dean of the merchant guild who died in 1633, bequeathing funds for the founding of an alms house for the maintenance of thirteen 'decayed' members of the guild. A plaque on the building bears the inscription, "This hospital was erected and largely provided by John Cowane Deane of Gild for the entertainment of decayed Gild breithr. [brethren] 1639". It was also used as a guildhall for the town's merchants and later as a schoolhouse and then a fever hospital. Now called the Stirling Guildhall it is a venue for concerts, meetings and ceilidhs. http://www.stirling.gov.uk/index/stirling/visitstirling/john_cowane_s_hospital.htm
